Methodology

How our sizing recommendations work

WhatGearFits gives parents a practical starting point, not a final fit approval. Youth sports gear varies by brand, model, league rules, body shape, and player preference, so our recommendations should be confirmed with real measurements and the exact brand chart before you buy.

Starting ranges first

We use age, height, weight, and sport-specific patterns to narrow the first size range.

Measurement over guessing

Protective gear, helmets, gloves, skates, shoes, and fins should be confirmed with measurements.

Brand charts are final

When a brand chart conflicts with a general range, use the official chart for the exact product.

Safety gear gets caution

We avoid fake precision for helmets and protective equipment. Measure and verify before buying.

When to ask a coach, fitter, or league

Ask for help when buying helmets, shoulder pads, skates, position-specific gear, or anything governed by league rules. The site can prepare you for the conversation, but it should not replace an official fit check, retailer guidance, manufacturer instructions, or league review for protective equipment.
